About Teen Dad

"Teen Dad," penned by the exceptionally talented Adrienne Dawes, is a riveting production that masterfully weaves wit and humanity into its storyline. The narrative revolves around Abby, a self-proclaimed emo-goth teenager, who orchestrates a surprise reunion between her mother and birth father, embarking on a journey to reconcile their tumultuous past. Dawes, currently a graduate student in playwriting at the University of Arkansas, brings her unique perspective to the forefront. Her educational journey includes earning a bachelor's degree from Sarah Lawrence College and honing her craft in sketch and improv at The Second City in Chicago, IL.

Arts One Presents is thrilled to produce "Teen Dad" in collaboration with the highly acclaimed local playwright, Adrienne Dawes, who has left an indelible mark on the storytelling landscape in Northwest Arkansas.

Additionally, Arts One Presents is committed to ensuring equitable access for differently-abled individuals to attend this production. We are partnering with local organizations to create an inclusive experience for all. Furthermore, we will host a special showing of "Teen Dad" with American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation to enhance accessibility.

Please note that "Teen Dad" is rated PG-13. The production includes elements of mild language, suggestive dialogue, and mild violence. The narrative explores critical themes such as police brutality, racial identity, and generational trauma, offering a thought-provoking and impactful theatrical experience.

  • Playwright

    Adrienne Dawes (she/her/hers) is a highly accomplished playwright, screenwriter, and producer with roots in Austin, TX. She has received acclaim for her works such as AM I WHITE (honored with the B. Iden Payne Award and David Mark Cohen New Play Award), TEEN DAD, HAIRY & SHERRI, and THIS BITCH. Her educational background includes a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and training in sketch and improv at the Second City Training Center in Chicago.

    Adrienne has been recognized with several prestigious awards and fellowships, including the Walter E. Dakin Fellow at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, Alice Judson Hayes Fellow at Ragdale Foundation, and the Arkansas Arts Council Individual Fellowship Award. Her creative pieces have found a home with renowned theater companies and festivals like The Road Theatre Company, Theatre Bedlam, and The Fire This Time Festival.

    Adrienne is an active member of the WGAw and the Dramatists Guild. Beyond her creative pursuits, she is an experienced teaching artist, offering instruction in playwriting, theatre appreciation, and arts entrepreneurship. She has also lent her talents to coaching bands at Girls Rock! summer camps.

    In addition to her impressive portfolio, Adrienne has contributed to a limited series with Hulu/ABC Signature.

  • Director

    Trey Smith is a graduate of the University of Arkansas, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, and now he’s back at the U of A pursuing a Master of Education in Higher Education. Trey is a native of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

    Some of his favorite previous credits include: Director of The Dream of the Burning Boy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in The Mountaintop, Josh in American Idiot, Belize in Angels in America, Paul in Kiss Me, Kate, Orcus in She Kills Monsters, Booth in Topdog/Underdog, Anthony in I & You, Jesse in This Bitter Earth, and Tristan in This Bitch.

    Trey like Piña coladas, but hates getting caught in the rain. After graduation Trey plans to wing it. Trey would like to dedicate this performance to his dad.
